The Alpinists

Valais Adventure - Cabane d’Orny

14.-15. September 2024 (Backup: 21.-22. September 2024)

The Plan

Nestled in the Swiss Alps, the photography adventure at the Cabane d’Orny offers a breathtaking experience with the majestic Trient Glacier as its stunning centerpiece. This remarkable glacier, often bypassed in favor of more frequented tourist destinations, offers a pristine and dramatic alpine landscape perfect for photography enthusiasts.

The journey kicks off with a coffee and meetup, accompanied by a brief theory session, setting the stage for an unforgettable photographic expedition in the mountains. Over the course of this two-day experience, you will be deeply engaged in comprehensive photography lessons. These sessions cover a wide range of topics, including location scouting, trip planning, essential gear, photo editing, and selecting the best shots. Most importantly, you’ll learn a variety of photography techniques to capture the breathtaking scenery.

A major highlight of this adventure is the trek to the Cabane d’Orny, a journey through an area rich with diverse photographic subjects. The contrast between the serene, icy expanse of the Trient Glacier and the rugged, mountainous terrain provides a visually stunning backdrop. This experience is more than just capturing the beauty of the landscapes; it’s an opportunity to delve into the subtleties of high-altitude photography set against one of the Alps’ most magnificent glaciers.

    Frequently asked questions

What level of photography is required?

The workshop is meant for people who already know some of the basics of photography and tends to build upon the basics of the outdoor workshops. However everyone is welcome and we can make sure that everybody can learn and improve their knowledge!

Besides that, we only ask you to bring passion, energy and the drive to be out in the field every day no matter what the weather is like.

    What should I bring?

We will send out a clothing list before the trip. We recommend that you layer up! Bring comfortable clothes for sunny days and layers for when it’s colder such as in the morning and evening. A rain jacket, preferably Gore-tex and a wool underlayer will help when shooting after sunset. Merino socks and hiking boots are your best friend. As the saying goes “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. Temperatures during the day could hit over 20 degrees Celsius and on an evening in the mountains approach 0 degrees Celsius.

What are the required fitness conditions?

During this workshop we will have to carry the camera equipment as well as clothes, food and water for hikes. You should bring some experience in hiking and have an appropriate fitness level to do some hours of hiking.

    Where will we be staying?

We will be staying in the Cabane d’Orny mountain hut.

    Can I bring a drone?

Of course! Please only use your drone where it is allowed to do so. We would recommend bringing a DJI Mavic sized drone to give you a smooth travel experience. If you are interested we can give you inputs to aerial photo- and videography.

What and where will we eat?

We will eat dinner and breakfast in the mountain hut. Where and how to eat lunch is up to you.
